Chapter Six

Eiorwin went down to the dining room for breakfast and kept to herself, lost in her thoughts while she ate.

“So, did you have a good first day?” Drak sat next to her and filled her cup of coffee.

“Yes. It was educational.” She glanced at him with a smile.

“You came in early this morning, so I thought you might have had a good evening.”

“I did but not in the way you were thinking.”

“You didn’t spend an evening with someone whose company you enjoyed?”

She was about to answer negatively, but then, she thought about it. “I actually did.”

“Are you going to see them again? Have you made an agreement to meet another time?”

Eiorwin looked around, and there were no other guests in the room. “There is something scheduled, but not for a few weeks.”

Drak blinked. “A few weeks?”

She grimaced and nodded.

“Is that his stipulation?”

She reached up and rubbed the back of her neck. “Not really. It just seems the way that fate will decide things.”

Drak nodded, still stunned but understanding. “If that is the way it will be, that is the way it will be.”

Eiorwin smiled. “I am sorry to be a burden on your house.”

“No, it is no trouble. I have had guests here for six months if necessary.” Drak smiled. “There is no time limit to find the mate you will have for the rest of your life.”

Eiorwin nodded. “True. Oh, is there a communication desk I can use?”

“Of course. If you are done with breakfast, I can show you to my office. That is the only outer communication outlet that is available.”

“That will be fine. I just need to make sure that a friend knows I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth. My family may not have given her the message.”

“Right. Well, shall we?”

She finished her coffee, shivered as she let the heat dissipate, and then, she got to her feet. “Please.”

She followed him down the hall, and he paused and turned back.

“I have not had one of the illuminated ones here before.”

“Oh, well, I am also a maker if that makes it worse.” She smiled.

“Really?”

“Truly.”

He whistled softly. “No wonder you are having a hard time choosing.”

She wrinkled her nose. “Family inheritance. It goes along with everything else.”

“Interesting and terrifying. Here we are.” He opened the door and stepped aside. “Thank you for going through regular channels.”

She grinned. “It is polite, and my mother insisted on manners. If something was available and I could simply request it, I should. I can save my magic for something I can’t obtain by other means.”

She passed him and eased the door closed. “Thank you. I will only be a few minutes.”

He nodded and the door locked.

Eiorwin headed to the office chair, and she touched the keyboard, her fingers blurring as she typed. The screen went blue then green then red. Finally, Eilonwy’s features filled the screen.

“Trill! I am glad you are doing well. So, how are you adjusting?”

“So, you knew.”

“I did. I thought it would be better coming from Larion.
